Where to start…
When I first saw that Romain Gavras directed the No Church in the Wild music video by Jay Z and Kanye West, I immediately knew it was gonna be good and that it was going to make a powerful statement. While I blatantly disregard Bad Girls video, since the message in that video wasn’t as strong, lets take a look back at the Born Free music video (both songs by M.I.A.)
Born Free told a story about injustice and inequality through the type of people everyone loves to hate: Gingers. We always joke about how gingers have no soul, but imagine a world where authorities wanted to eliminate a group of people because their genetics just weren’t good enough. Oh wait, that was the Holocaust and just about half the tribal wars in Africa. The song conveys the idea that (for the most part) we are all born free individuals and that we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be enslaved by the ideologies of others. The video takes this message one step further when the Gingers are forced to run through a mine field, making the audience realize that the only way that we can be free is through death. Morbid, yes. But, in situations like that, it’s true.
Now, the No Church in the Wild video uses the same concept of rebelling against authority to show how there is nobody to enforce order on people, since the church is infamous for doing so throughout the years. However, the why doesn’t seem to be there. I feel like I’ve stepped into the middle of a war whose circumstances are not apparent (the war on terror, anyone?). I don’t understand why all these people are rebelling. Is it because of race? No, because the rebels are a diverse crowd. There’s religious imagery throughout the video, but what does it all mean? There’s statues that look like they glorify the oppression, then there’s a few that look like the gods are crying at the anarchy that has ensued. I’m sure that there is a deeper meaning behind the rioting, but for now this music video is just one big “WHY?“I’m pretty sure when I watch it a couple more times, it might become apparent.
Another qualm that I have with videos/mini-films like these is that they don’t incorporate the performance anywhere in the film. I understand sometimes it isn’t fitting to the message in the lyrics, but I personally prefer to see the artist show us their acting chops and be somewhere in the video. But, it is what it is.
